Staying Healthy on Vacation

If you’re planning a vacation but also want to keep momentum on your new healthy lifestyle, here are a few suggestions on how to go on vacation without derailing your efforts.

Pay attention to your liquid calories.  Whether they’re alcoholic or not, drinks can quickly increase your daily calorie intake and undo your weight loss efforts without even making you feel satisfied. Be sure to let yourself have some treats so you don’t feel deprived, but instead of having a milkshake every day, let yourself have one as a treat. When allowing yourself to have adult beverages, avoid things that have lots of sugar. Try to lean towards light beer, a small serving of wine, or flavored liqueur and tonic water instead of fancy high calorie cocktails. People also tend to make poor food choices after consuming alcohol so that is something else to keep in mind.

Plan ahead and take your own, healthy, food. If you’re on the road it is far too easy to stop off at a fast food restaurant when you’re hungry. These meals are extremely high in calories and fat content and often do not leave people feeling satisfied. The high concentration of carbohydrates and sugar also lead to more food cravings for sugar, further promoting poor food choices. By taking your own healthy foods and snacks, you will prevent vacation weight gain and save money at the same time. It’s a good idea to split the food you take into individual serving sizes to help prevent mindless eating as well. If you have a large bag of pretzels or other snacks, use small zip lock bags to portion them out so you aren’t tempted to absently consume the entire bag. This small amount of work will protect your diet and ensure that you get proper nutrition.

When you do eat out while on your vacation, pay attention to how much you eat and what you eat. If you know you’re going to have a nice dinner and you want to treat yourself with dessert, eat low calorie healthy options during the day and eat a bit less than you want to. That way, when you have dinner, you’ll appreciate it even more and still keep your calorie consumption in check. If you eat mindlessly, any weight loss you experienced before your vacation will likely unravel.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated while you travel. Hunger is often a front for what is really dehydration. Make sure you always have a bottle of water with you. Not only will it help remind you to stay hydrated, it will help ward off food cravings as well. If you see something you think you want, but you’re not sure if you’re hungry or if it’s worth the calories, drink a bottle of water. If you still want it an hour later you can treat yourself to it.

The best vacation options are the ones that let you be active at the same time. Try walking around while you’re exploring a new city instead of using a cab or public transportation. Try a new workout class that isn’t offered where you live. Get up early before the crowds hit and take a nice long walk along a beach or through a pretty park. You’ll feel better throughout the day and you’ll appreciate the scenery of the area as well. Wouldn’t it be great to increase your fitness while on vacation?
